UNAIR NEWS – Everyone can be public relations, it was stated by Anang Sujoko, S.Sos., M.Si., D.Comm., an alumnus of bachelor and master program of Department of Communication, Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (FISIP), Universitas Airlangga. The man now is trusted as the Head of Information and Public Relations Unit of a well-known university in Malang.

He never thought he would be given the position. He knew about it during some new official induction in his institution. Regarding the job, he said that in principle, everyone is a public relations for themselves.

“For me, we all can be PR, but we must make sure where we are. When we know the context, everyone can be PR, at least for themselves,” said Anang.

At his bachelor program study in FISIP UNAIR, Anang admitted that he was not a student which was at the top academically. He was more interested to be an activist in organizations. He used to be a deputy of Student Representative Board FISIP UNAIR at that time.

“At that time, I began to understand the importance of social interaction and communication networking among students from many faculties. When I was in BPM UNAIR, I was also active in inter-university BPM organization. At that time, there was a student from Institut Agama Islam Negeri Sunan Ampel, Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember, IKIP Surabaya, and UB. We went on strike demanding SDSB termination,” said Anang who was graduated as a bachelor with GPA 3.06.

Even though he was known as a student who was good with rhetoric, he felt that he was a quiet student in senior high school. His old friends often surprised with his current line of work.

At college, he was one of WARTA UNAIR reporters. From 1994-1995, monthly tabloid WARTA UNAIR was managed by Airlangga University Press (AUP).

“In those early editions, you must find my name. The director was Pak Yan Yan Cahyana. I was with my senior from master program of Communication, Bu Lestari, and from Literature was  Pak Susilo. Three of us worked for all those tabloids. It was published once a month. We tried to adjust our rhythm with the deadlines as we were only three at that time,” said Anang who used to be Deputy of Regional Information Broadcasting Commission of East Java.

As a reporter of WARTA UNAIR, the doctor graduated from a famous university in Australia with his partners played public relations function. All activities, achievements and ideas of UNAIR academicians were covered.

Building Reputation

UNAIR has been appointed by the Ministry of Research, Technology and Higher Education (Kemenristke-Dikti) to reach Top 500 World Top University. As UNAIR alumnus with excellent performance, Anang said that UNAIR has had potentials towards there. But, reputation and commitment should be improved.

“Internal improvement is important. If we talk about world class university, we talk about reputation and commitment. To build reputation, we must base everything on truth,” said Anang.

He said that when reputation and internal condition is improved, then UNAIR efforts will be futile if the public does not know about them.

“All things built together consistently will not mean a thing if they are not publicized. Public relations need to disseminate the information to public so they would know how the university work hard in maintaining quality,” said Anang. (*)
