UNAIR NEWS – Nowadays, technological and information developments grow exponentially. Along with it, libraries are expected to adapt well in current development and globalization so they can provide services which please the customers.
As one of its 61st anniversary celebrations, UNAIR library held a seminar entitled “Personal Branding for Librarian”. As the speakers, Drs. Suko Widodo, M.Si (Head of Information and Public Relations Center UNAIR), Dr. Dewi Retno Suminar, M.Si., (Psychologist, UNAIR lecturer), and Drs. Koko Srimulyo, M.Si., (Secretary of UNAIR) were present. The seminar held in Parlinah Room, Campus B UNAIR library, was attended by dozens of librarians from many institutions in Indonesia.
“Good branding is needed to change the community mindset towards libraries. The community should get new and fresher perspective on librarians. Reputation is a new way of someone to get success in the future,” said Suko.
The FISIP UNAIR lecturer said librarians should make library be a modern lifestyle. So they do not only record book titles and their quantity, but more than that. They should make a breakthrough. They should be better listeners to know what the public want including, improving facilities of the libraries to meet their need.
“The key, always maintain communication with the customers. Know yourself, know your room, know your client, know how to communicate,” said Suko followed with nodding audiences.
It was also elaborated, that librarians should possess five qualities, respect, empathy, open-minded, certainty and hospitality. All those should be possessed as personal identity.
Meanwhile, Koko Srimulyo said that librarians should change their mindset on career. Career is not only in structural positions. Gaining experience and opportunity are also important elements of career.
“Librarians should develop effective, collaborative and synergetic networking, multi skilled specialist also developing adversity quotient not only IQ, EQ and SQ. Librarians should be able to provide service which ease up the customers to get information,” said the lecturer of Information and Library Science FISIP UNAIR.
When it happens, he added, the customers will be loyal to the librarians. So, librarians can compete to provide services which please the users of libraries. (*)
