UNAIR NEWS – Early detection of Colorectal cancer was the great topic presented by three Faculty of Medicine (FK) Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) students, Zaufy Verlieza, Binarri Augustya, and Fauzi Abdillah, for scientific poster competition Halu Oleo Scientific Competition (HOLISTIC 2016) in Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Halu Oleo (FKU UHO), Kendari, South East Sulawesi. In the national competition, they got third place on scientific poster category. There were many universities participating such as Universitas Indonesia, Universitas Udayana, Universitas Brawijaya, Universita Islam Indonesia, and Universitas Halu Oleo.
In the occasion, FKUA team proposed written suggestion on early detection and non-invasive therapy based on micro-RNA to suppress mortality rate. Accurately, to detect Colorectal cancer early through blood test. To check if there is damage in the colon.
As we all know Colorectal cancer is cancer which attacks colon anad rectum. This cancer was the second deadliest disease. Colorectal cancer, as any other cancers, can grow quite fast and it can also infiltrate and take root in the surrounding tissue and damage it.
This cancer can spread far to lymph gland or blood veins. Spreading to organs located further from the disease initial growth such as to liver, lungs and finally causes death if it is not handled with care.
Generally, colorectal cancer is started with swelling like a button on colon surface or a polyp. Then cancer will infiltrate the colon wall. Lymph gland nearby can also be exposed. Because the blood from the colon wall goes to liver, cancer can spread to liver. Unfortunately, this disease often detected late. It often detected when the damage is already severe.
Modify the screening with miRNA method
FKUA team lead by Zaufy thought how to detect early and with easier application as all this time the screening is done by sigmoidoscopy and performing colonoscopy.
They modified the screening with miRNA method for early detection before metastasis happens through blood test. In the process, the blood is separated at its plasma level then it is isolated with polymerase reaction to reduplicate the gene.
Beside Zaufy’s team, other FKUA delegation who also succeeded in Holistic FK UHO 2016 were Bella Patricia, Patricia Tjiongnata, and Anthomina Maya, as the second place on public poster category . And Made Angga got third place for single scientific poster and third place for scientific paper. (*)
