UNAIR NEWS – In endocrinology, prevention and treatment still focuses on diabetes mellitus. The most cases of endocrinology were about diabetes mellitus. Thyroid nodule cases – a lump on thyroid gland – do not get the same attention as diabetes mellitus, even though the number of the cases was not small.
Thyroid nodule is a condition clinically known as abnormal growth of thyroid gland. If a person suffers from this abnormality, thyroid gland will change structurally and functionally. It was stated by Prof. Dr. dr. Ari Sutjahjo, Sp.PD., K-EMD., FINASIM in his scientific speech, “Thyroid Nodule Management Applied in Limited Facility.” His speech was presented during his professorship award in Garuda Mukti Hall, UNAIR Management Office Building, Saturday April 30.
“Because thyroid gland anatomically located on the surface, thyroid nodules can be detected easily with physical exam or with diagnostic treatments like ultrasonography, scintigraphy, and CT-scan,” said Prof. Ari.
In treating thyroid nodule, people need to know the symptoms and other general knowledge about the thyroid gland. “More counseling and education in public needed to understand thyroid nodule well, complaints from the disease. Also possible complications from the disease and what needs to do,” said Prof. Ari.
Related to medical education, Prof. Ari stated that bachelor medical students should be given more opportunities to do practices in endocrinology ward to assist the doctor. About the specialist II program. He stated that Indonesia needs more endocrinologist.
Prof. Ari made it to fulfill professorship requirement in a week. He became a professor after he acquired 1,050 points from 850 required points required.
At first, he did not have any intention to submit professorship. He only wanted to submit his retirement paper as he is 65 years old in 2016. FK UNAIR staff considered his points enough to make him a professor in internal medicine.
