UNAIR NEWS – Technology has changed the history of mankind. It was stated by Prof. Dr. Henri Subiakto, Drs., S.H., M.Si, during press conference on Thursday April 28. He also explained how technological development of printing could change religious community in the fifteenth century. Until now, technology is still developing towards digital communication.

The changes mostly happen in human life either digital or real one. Techonology promotes social or economic collectivity. Many individuals in cyber space or known as netizens showed their concern to virtual world or real world, on humanity events in the other parts of the world.

Virtual world netizens are citizens of the future. They were born in late nineties and close to internet connectivity and technology. The digital native generation has been exposed to various technological developments while the previous generations are not so adept with it and called digital immigrant.

In the end according to Prof. Henri, technology has changed the capital direction. Over the Top (OTT) service is happening on digital communication. OTT service is the meeting point of telecommunication and internet. OTT service enables the users to get internet advantages which were not available on communication and internet operators.

With many creativities and innovations, this generation has brought smart technology. Based on the usage, OTT can be divided into five. First, communication OTT which enables the users in the internet network to communicate through the internet and real time such as WhatsApp, LINE, Messengers and other kinds. Second, content media OTT which enables the users to access content service such as video and music like YouTube, Netflix, Soundcloud and the other kinds.

Third, Commerce OTT which enables users and businessmen to interact through PayPal, OLX, Uber, Go-Jek and Bukalapak. Fourth, Media Social OTT which enables the users to interact in virtual world like Facebook, Twitter, Path, Linked In, Tumblr and its kind. Fifth, Information Collecting OTT which enables users to access information and databases such as Google Search, Google Maps, Google Earth, Mozilla Firefox, Yahoo! Search etc.

“There is a conceptual change along with digital communication development. Intellectuals used to serve for capital. Everything can be bought with money but now is different. Now the capital serves for technology. In 2014, WhatsApp was bought with US $19 billion.  It was almost one-fifth of Indonesian national budget, “said Prof. Henri.

In his opinion, business which can be profitable in the future is OTT service. OTT service has been able to connect parties which need with parties which have the resources. For example, Go-Jek, it connects users who need vehicles to riders who need some money. It is similar with what offered by Uber and Grab.

“OTT connects people who need to people who have. E-commerce, Go-Jek, nebengers and uber are in the form of economy sharing. It changes business model exponentially,” said the professor on Communication Science, Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (FISIP) Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR).

Media Social OTT and searching engines also threaten conventional media such as television, radio and newspaper. Prof. Henri said that conventional media  existence are micro-targeting the buyers behavior. On the other hand, OTT existence also brings lots of profits, So digital business models like these  are still promising in the future.

Therefore, the decision makers who are still in digital immigrant category should be able to adapt massive technological development. “Our descendants later will live in internet era, not only physical one. Life is about migration. This is not understood by digital immigrants as it touches every aspects of our life. Are we ready? (*)
