UNAIR NEWS – In the efforts to reach Top 500 World Universities in 2019 as targeted by DIKTI, Universitas Airlangga invites all elements to support and work together to achieve it. All components such as students, lecturers, professors, alumni to campus community to achieve the target in their own field of studies.
Therefore, Institute of Educational Research and Development (LP3) UNAIR encouraged the lecturers and researchers especially the doctors and professors to be in synergy in accomplishing the mission by holding a seminar entitled “Peran Guru Besar dan Doktor Universitas Airlangga dalam Pencapaian 500 Besar World Class University (The Roles of Professors and Doctors of Universitas Airlangga to Achieve Top 500 World University) ”. LP3 invited Prof. Dr. Ir. KH. Mohammad Nuh, DEA, Indonesian Minister of Education from 2009 to 2014, as the speaker in the event.
In his speech, Prof. Djoko Agus Purwanto, Apt., M.Si., the Head of LP3 UNAIR said that to reach Top 500 World University, LP3 will improve six foundations, information systems, curriculum, e-learning, MOOC (Massive Open Online Course), textbooks and research.LP3 has targeted that each course has its textbook and LP3 will be the center of textbooks development as well as the funding source of it.
The professor of Pharmaceutical Chemistry UNAIR also emphasized Student Centered Learning (SCL) should be implemented, not only Teacher Centered Learning (TCL). Students should be active in learning, not the teachers who are active in teaching.
In the occasion, Prof. M. Nuh gave a speech on the doctors and professors’ roles to support the university to be a world class university (WCU). “We expect UNAIR to be harmonious and you, ladies and gentlemen are the key,” said M. Nuh opening his speech.
He said that the number of high skilled workers in Indonesia is only about 10 %. It is very far in comparison to European countries which reach 50%. In Malaysia, the percentage is at 30%. Therefore, Indonesia should make improvements in all sectors. Universities have central roles in producing skilled human resources.
“We (universities, -ed) should increase our human resources which have high qualification. UNAIR should no longer think about its internal aspect, but beyond, UNAIR has its responsibilities to improve the nation and its humanity,” said M. Nuh.
“Why civilization in Europe is at the front? Because they had invested extraordinarily for educational resources,” he continued.
According to M. Nuh, Indonesian potential capital in the future is on education as it will also work on social transformation. Doctors and professors have important roles as supporter, driver, enabler, source of enlightment, and role model. The roles should be implemented either directly or indirectly through Tri Dharma of University.
“So, UNAIR should be an enabler which makes impossible thing becomes possible and finally becomes a reality,” said Prof. M. Nuh. (*)
