“Even now, I still can’t believe myself. I was sure that there are others with higher GPA than me. But I’m grateful for being trusted by God for this,” she said affectedly.

As student, Yolanda performed as usual. She admitted that she was not as critical as other students in many ways. She believes, only one thing which brought her to this success. “One thing for sure is that there’s no results which are not from efforts and prayers,” said the girl who has been an assistant lecturer of Financial Management.

Her hardwork deserves to be congratulated. During holiday, unlike other students choosing to go back home, she stayed in Surabaya. She would not get back home until she finished with her thesis exam.

“All my friends in boarding house went home, but I didn’t. I made a promise to myself that I wouldn’t get back home until I finished my thesis exam,” she said as she wanted to make her parents proud.

In Faculty of Economics and Business (FEB), she was grateful for having the opportunity to study under guidance of attentive lecturers and meeting great and supportive friends. Memories at college for four years will always be beautiful memories in the future. (*)

Most of studies on Ayu Utami’s novels were conducted from angles of sexuality, gender, and feminism. But Sandra Whilla Mulia found another angle, magical realism. One of Ayu Utami’s novels with this aspect is  “Simple Miracles Doa dan Arwah”.

“The novel talked a lot about beliefs, myths, and tradition related to legendary creatures of Java such as pocong and kuntilanak. It is rarely studied,” said the Lamongan native. She added that many researchers tend to study magical realism from other countries’ literary works.

She admitted that to finish her thesis was not an easy task. She had to go back and forth Unair and UGM to look for suitable references. But her hardwork was finally paid off and it boosted her GPA at 3.84 and named as the best graduate of the Faculty of Humanities (FIB) master program last graduation.

“Focus and seriousness in doing assignment, not hesitate to consult lecturers and friends are the tricks,” said the lecturer of Folklore study in Universitas Wijaya Kusuma Surabaya on tips and tricks of her success. She also emphasized that it cannot be separated from her parents’ prayers.

For Sandra, her success to be the best graduate is also a part of her belief that being beautiful for women is not enough, but a great combination is from a beautiful face and capable intellectuals. (*)
