Tunas Muda Airlangga Commemorates National Garbage Concern Day

UNAIR NEWS – One of national environmental commemoration days is National Garbage Concern Day on February 21. This year commemoration was concentrated in Makassar, South Sulawesi. This day usually commemorated by doing community services in collecting garbage.

In this regard, PDD UNAIR Banyuwangi in Tunas Muda Airlangga also contributed in cleaning up movement in three spots of Banyuwangi. They were Boom Beach, Satelit Muncar Beach, and Mount Ijen. There were 41 communities joining the event in the furthest east town of East Java.

”We’ll do our best to contribute for Indonesia environments. We will not let those slogans echoed across the nation be nonsense,” said the head of Tunas Muda Airlangga, Yustia Vandana.

Historically, this day was to commemorate the waste treatment facility (TPA) Leuwigajah landslide which caused 100 souls casualties. In addition, garbage is a major problem Indonesia face, and it often disrupt the development with problems caused by garbage.

Yustia explanation was similar to what the head of IDI Banyuwangi said. He said that the community should not merely shouting the slogans in celebration but should also make real acts and contributions to realize Indonesia Free from Garbage 2020 Campaign.

Other than picking up garbage, there were also national selfie/groufie activity to support “garbage diet” campaign and efforts to reduce community waste. The event was ended by a declaration of 41 communities as their commitment to reduce garbage. (*)
