Calisthenics Encourages Healthy Life with Street Workout

UNAIR NEWS – There’s a healthy mind in a healthy body. That’s the well-known Latin phrase meant. Life is full of challenges and problems. To handle them, a human should have a healthy and balanced body and mind. That is what motivates every Airlangga Calisthenics’ member.

The community was started by three students in a self defense club at UNAIR. Three of them enjoy calisthenics, so they built a community Airlangga on May 28, 2013. It was initiated by Dhimas Prasetya Ramadhan, a Management 2008 student from UNAIR Faculty of Economics and Business. Since then, they have practiced using iron poles and facilities at Keputran Park Surabaya.

“It’s been two years since the establishment. We used to practice at Keputran Park. Then, many people were interested and joined,” Paksitya Purnama Putra, coordinator of Airlangga Calisthenics said.

Airlangga Calisthenics is the first street workout community in Surabaya. This community performs physical exercises only by using their own weight and using limited equipments. Other than focused on physical strength, they also utilized poles and other facilities in Surabaya parks. Various muscle exercise are performed such as push up, pull up, dips, plank and other workout movements.

Routine exercise is programmed five times in a week located at Taman Prestasi Surabaya. Before exercising there, they trained at East Java KONI field. Consequently, KONI athletes often joined Airlangga Calisthenics.

“We also teach the others to organize and socialize. This community is a sharing place for our athlete-friends,” Paksitya said.
