Gema, Resonating Composer From FIB UNAIR

UNAIR NEWS – Decided to quit from her steady job as civil servant (PNS) did not make her end her career and jobless. She believed that everyone had to take the risks for their passions. The alumnus of Indonesian Literature 2008 Faculty of Cultural Sciences (FIB) UNAIR had proven that her determination and her musical talents made her dreams come true. To this day, she has a successful career in Arts and Music along with her works’ popularity.

Gema Swaratyagita, is one of many talented composers in Indonesia. Last January, Gema was named as one of eight Indonesian composers invited by Ensemble Modern in Frankfurt, Germany. Gema and other seven composer’s works were performed by Ensemble Modern and vise versa. This achievement would not have happened without hardwork and sacrifice.

The woman born on January 8, 1984 has made many great achievements. Some of them were The Best 7 of Festival Musik Tradisi Baru Tembi held by Tembi Cultural House, Yogyakarta in 2014, Collaborator Participant of City Soundscape Project 2012 held by Piet Hein Van de Poul. She was also the first winner of Song Composing for Teachers with her song Raih Mimpiku held by Surabaya Education Department. She has been the director of Laring Project, an organization of arts and music.

“Larynx is the source of sounds in human body. If we don’t have larynx, we can’t make voices. In the end I focus myself on it as it is an exploration of any sounds. Not only instrumental,” Gema explained of how the name Laring project came up. (bin/bes)
