UNAIR NEWS – The second day of Airlangga Education Expo (AEE) filled with students, teachers, and parents of students who come from various regions. One interesting material on the second day was exposure in choosing a study program.

Responding to participant’s anxiety in determining study program, Dr. Dewi Retno Suminar or Dewi as vice dean III Faculty of Psychology UNAIR gave tips on choosing majors according to their interests and talents for all participants who attended the second day’s AEE on Saturday, February 16. At least, there are three things that prospective students need to consider in choosing study program.

Have a Dream

“Don’t be afraid to dream!” said Dewi.

Before making a choice, Dewi advised participants to have dream. At the very least, what participants would have imagined theirselves in ten years? Or where do they work? And as what?

Not only dreaming. Next, participants need to start designing ways to reach their dream.

As an example, Dewi explained that if someone wants to become an entrepreneur then it is necessary to understand entrepreneurship. One way is becoming a student in management program at UNAIR.

Get to know your own strengths

The second tips given by Dewi is to recognize their own strength. So the participants will find out what they are good at.

“For example, when they know their abilities, then a children who is not good at biology and chemistry but good at physics should not choose medical department instead they should choose another department such as engineering department.” explained Dewi.

There are several ways to recognize your strength. One of them is by seeing their good grades because if a student gets good grades in certain school subject, it means student are interested and able to study in a field related to their school subject.

In addition, participants also need to know other talents that they has good memory and a hard-working person. If someone does not have a good memory, Dewi suggested that don’t choose medical department because studying in there, it requires good memory. In addition, if they are not hard-working person then they should not choose engineering majors or other majors that requires high perseverance.

“In addition, everyone can also find out their interests and talents by taking interest and talent tests” Dewi said.

Focus on your self-interest

Dewi advised participants not to enter study programs that are not in demand. According to her, if someone is not interested in a field, then he will not give his best effort. In reverse, if someone is interested in a field, then he will be encouraged to learn about the field.

“Follow your heart, don’t choose your study program based on your friends preference” Dewi said remindingly.
